RACES AWARDED; INDIVIDUALS HONORED AT PNSA CONVENTIONJune 1-2 (Kennewick, WA): The Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA), in which SSRA is a member team, held its annual convention on June 1-2 in the Tri-Cities. This annual meeting helps to set policy, rules, and creates a competition calendar for the PNSA division of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association. At the event, SSRA was awarded the first U16 Championship qualifier of the year. The qualifier will be held on January 18-20, 2014 and will consist of 2GS and 1SL. In addition, SSRA was awarded a 2-day EEYSL race at the subsequent EEYSL meeting. These GS races will take place on January 11-12, 2014. SSRA and the Spokane racing community took several awards home as well. Most notably was the Ken Comfort Award given annually to a person who over the years has given freely of his/her timeto help the sport of skiing, either recreationally or competitively. In this small way their efforts are recognized. "For outstanding service to the PNSA and the Sport of Skiing" This year's recipient was SSRA race administrator Tabitha Hamilton! In addition, the Masters Sub-Committee Scholarships were awarded to Elyse Burandt and Michael Estrella for their continued remarkable achievements and overall U16 titles. Another significant accolade was the annual Press Award with the nod given to The Spokesman-Review. This is the fifth time that the paper has been recognized for outstaning ski racing press. Thank you to Chuck Stewart for his reporting on one of the Spokane area's most important sports. PNSA also gives "unsung hero awards" for service to PNSA and it's member clubs above and beyond the call of duty. SSRA volunteers received 12 of these awards at this year's convention demonstrating the organization's dedication to service. ALPINE TEAM WRAPS UP 2013-2014 AT GOLDEN ROSE May 25-26 (Mt. Hood-Government Camp, Oregon) Thirteen SSRA athletes competed in the annual Golden Rose Evergreen Cup races at Timberline Ski Area on Mt. Hood. For the 78th time, the Golden Rose brought together some of the best racers in the west to race four slalom races (8 runs total) in just two days. Due to new snow, conditions allowed for 3 of the 4 races to be completed. Elyse Burandt led the SSRA women with 2 wins and a second place finish for U16 women. Rachel Grzelak was the top SSRA U14 with two 22nd place finishes in her age class. On the men's side, Michael Estrella led the way for SSRA men with two bronzes and one 4th place finish amongst U16 men. Cole McClellan led the SSRA U14 men with a bronze and a 4th in two starts. Scot Simpson led the boys in the third race with a 9th place finish amongst U14 men.
