FIRST YEAR U14's SHINE AT BUDDY WERNER CHAMPIONSHIPS

bwc2014-25percent

March 14-16 (Crystal Mountain, WA)- Ten SSRA U14 athletes travelled to Crystal Mountain Washington to compete in the Buddy Werner Championships, a U14 divisional championships race. Twenty teams from Oregon, Washington, and North Idaho competed. The SSRA Team solely consisted of first year U14's, which bodes well for next season as the entire team returns for next year's championships!

The weekend began with super G races and skills quest competitions. In the Super G, Isabell Simpson led the women with a 48th place (23rd for 2001's). Daria Markewych trailed in 52nd (25th for 2001's), followed by Olivia Ellingwood in 75th (37th for 2001's), and Rachel Ellingwood in 85th (42nd for 2001's). The men were fast with Ben Lewis finishing 16th (5th 2001), Aidtya Varadan 46th (17th 2001), Jake Mamola 56th (24th 2001), Sam Cox 63rd (29th 2001), and Drew Farley 70th (33rd 2001). In the skills quest, Jake Mamola earned a bronze with a 16th best score for the 2-drill event and a score of 4.75. Daria Markewych led the SSRA women with a skills quest finish of 22nd and a score of 3.38.

On Saturday, the women raced GS and the men raced slalom. Daria Markewych led the SSRA ladies with a 34th place (14th among 2001's). Isabell Simpson provided support in 44th (23rd for 2001's), flanked by Rachel Ellingwood in 67th (37th for 2001's) and Olivia Ellingwood in 71st (39th for 2001's). The men stacked 3 in the top 25 with Jake Mamola leading the charge in 17th (5th for 2001's). Ben Lewis was close in 20th (7th overall) with Aditya Varadan chasing in 25th (11th for 2001's). Johannes Liaboe put the hammer down and took 41st (21st for 2001's) with Drew Farley rounding out the men in 51st (30th 2001).

Sunday brought womens slalom and men's giant slalom. The women were again led by Daria Markewych with a 31st place finish (12th for 2001's). Rachel Ellingwood stopped the clock in 62nd place (35th 2001) and Olivia Ellingwood in 75th (41st 2001). Ben Lewis topped the SSRA men with a 17th place finish, good for 6th amongst first year U14's (2001's). Drew Farley proved that Crystal is his "home away from home" by taking 30th (12th for 2001's). Jake Mamola took 37th (15th 2001), Johannes Liaboe finished 42nd (19th 2001) and Sam Cox ranked 54th after two runs (27th for 2001's).
