SUN CUP SUPER G RACES KICK OFF SPEED WEEK

Mt. Bachelor, OR-February 19-20: Elyse Burandt led SSRA with a 3rd and 5th in Sun Cup/U16 Qualifier Super G's at Mt. Bachelor on Tuesday and Wednesday. In Super G #1, Ali Gunesch (MHA) won in 1:11.91. Second place was taken by Jordan Harrison of CMAC with a 1:12.63. Burandt took bronze with a time of 1:12.88 (2nd for U16 athletes). Next for SSRA was Rianne Ellingwood with 25 place (19th for U16's; 7th for 1998's) in 1:17.62. Berkeley Guenzel was 36th (26th for U16's; 11th for 1998's) in 1:20.01. Briley Thompson was 44th (32nd U16; 16th 1998) with a time of 1:21.02. In Super G #2, Gunesch claimed the top spot again with a time of 1:09.71. Harrison repeated in silver position with a 1:10.13. Phoebe Rogers of WPSC was third in 1:10.93. Tops for SSRA was Burandt in 7th (5th for U16's) clocked at 1:11.82. Rianne Ellingwood (SSRA) finished 22nd (16th U16; 7th 1998) in 1:14.74, Guenzel (SSRA) was 45th (33rd U16; 16th 1998) in 1:17.00, and Briley Thompson was 53rd (41st U16; 21st 1998) with a time of 1:20.04

The men's Super G #1 was won by SPAC's Boomer Vuori in 1:10.16. Carson Lyon of SPAC was second in 1:10.19 and Nicholas Wurden of CMAC was third in 1:10.21. Nic Dixon led the SSRA men with a 43rd place finish (27th U16) in 1:16.30. Adrian Markewych was next in 1:18.47 good for 57th overall (40th U16; 20th 1998). Will Gottsch ranked 63rd overall with a time of 1:20.89 making him the 46th place U16 athlete and 24th for his year of birth. Michael Estrella notched a 65th after some difficulty; 48th for the U16's in 1:21.57. Connor Peck was 68th (51st U16; 27th 1998) in 1:22.09. In Super G #2, Nicholas Wurden of CMAC reigned in 1:08.05. Tanner Lujan of MBSEF was runner-up in 1:08.16. Tyler Ellis, also of CMAC balanced the Next for SSRA was Adrian Markewych in 1:15.98 good for 68th overall, 52nd for U16's, and 25th for 1998's. Will Gottsch was just behind with a 69th place (53rd for U16's and 26th for 1998's) in 1:16.72. Connor Peck paced the team with a 74th overall (57th U16 and 28th 1998) in 1:18.99.

 

BURANDT MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT; DIXON 11th AND ELLINGWOOD 21st IN U16 QUALIFIER SLALOMS

February 18-Mount Hood Skibowl: Spokane Ski Racing Association (SSRA) U16 athlete, Elyse Burandt, extended her winning streak to three in U16 Qualifier slalom racing at Mt. Hood Skibowl today. Burandt swept the previous two days of giant slalom competition with decisive victories. Burandt won the first run of the slalom by almost a second. She used her first run margin and held on for the win in the second heat. Burandt finished with a combined time of 1:12.28 besting 2nd place finisher Jordan Harrison from Crystal Mountain Alpine Club (CMAC) who crossed the line in 1:13.73. "I narrowed down things to one technical and one thing tactical," said Burandt when asked what made the difference in her latest surge. She continued, "Narrowing the focus lets me close my mind and know what I have to do. I feel a lot more confident and have a more positive attitude." Alex Oseland (CMAC) completed the podium finishers with a total time of 1:13.94. Rianne Ellingwood (SSRA) was second for the SSRA women in 22nd place (11th for her year of birth-1998's) with a combined time of 1:20.40. Briley Thompson (SSRA) finished next for the women in 32nd (15th for the 1998's) in 1:25.76.

The men's race was won by Montana Kurahara of Mount Hood Academy (MHA) in 1:14.38, followed by 2nd place finisher Tanner Lujan of Mount Bachelor Ski Education Foundation (MBSEF) in 1:15.13, and third place finisher Matt Duchow of Schweitzer Alpine Racing School (SARS). The SSRA men were led by Nic Dixon in 11th place with a combined time of 1:18.52. Michael Estrella stopped the clock in 1:24.11 for 28th place. Will Gottsch made a move from 55th start position to finish 38th in 1:30.70. Notably, Gottsch was 17th for his year of birth (1998 men). Kyle Luiten moved from 77th to 50th to mark the largest team move-up finishing in 1:34.14. Luiten, also a first year U16 athlete, was 25th for his year of birth.

February 17- Spokane Ski Racing Association (SSRA) Athlete Elyse Burandt made it two in a row as she took gold in today's giant slalom U16 qualififer at Mt. Hood Skibowl. Burandt notched the win with a time of 2:19.19 and a winning margin of 1.34 seconds. Alexandrea Oseland of Crystal Mountain Alpine Team (CMAC) was second with a total time of 2:20.52. Jordan Harrison, also of CMAC was third in 2:21.85 rounding out the podium. Berkeley Guenzel (SSRA) moved into the top 20 with an 18th place finish after an excellent first run. Rianne Ellingwood (SSRA) was close behind with a 21st place and Briley Thompson (SSRA) stopped the clock with the 29th fastest combined time for the women's field.

On the men's side, Chase Ganim of Mount Bachelor Ski Education Foundation (MBSEF) won in 2:11.31. Michael Estrella of SSRA continued his medal run with a silver in the event and a total time of 2:12.19. Rounding out the podium was Tanner Lujan of MBSEF in 2:12.84. Will Gottsch (SSRA) powered to 27th place. Connor Peck finished in 32nd and Kyle Luiten placed 53rd.
