Immigration has informed us that for minors, some border
guards accept school photo ID's. However, some border guards require
a government-issued photo ID. We have not had trouble with either
in the past, but no one wants to be stranded at the border. For this
reason, if you do not a a government issued photo ID, contact your
city hall or police department to find out what kinds of photo ID's
are availabe.
- When a minor travels across the US/CAN border
with adults other than their own parents/legal guardians, or with
just one parent, specific paperwork is required. A letter
specifying that a minor will be under the supervision of the parent
driving the vehicle across the border is needed. Or...if your
child is travelling with just one parent, a letter of permission
from the other parent is required. THIS letter should be NOTARIZED!
Also refer to the purpose of the trip, the border crossing dates,
etc. Sign and date the letter. Make sure this is handy at the
border crossing. For an example of a border crossing authorization
letter, click
