The
S.S.R.A. boys team won the overall title at the Alpental 2004 Buddy
Werner Championships, March 12-14, 2004. Alex Burandt ( Spokane
), Hunter Downs ( Spokane ), Alec Ferraro (Chatteroy), Josh Honnold
( Spokane ), Robert Kincaid ( Spokane ), John-Michael Larson ( Spokane
), and Austin Walker ( Spokane ) all contributed a great deal to
the team victory. The SSRA boys won with a point total of 1522.
Stevens Pass (WA) was second with 1486, Team Alpental-Snoqualmie
(WA) was third with 1473, Cooper Spur (OR) was fourth with 1450
and Mount Bachelor (OR) was fifth with 1409.
“The
boys team victory was a complete surprise and was emotionally overwhelming
for everyone involved. People were high-fiving and hugging; it all
became a blur. Seeing those boys on top of the podium was incredible.
We've had champions in this race before, and I've watched some of
my athletes win Junior Olympic medals, but seeing a team come together
and achieve something like this is phenomenal”, said Chuck Holcomb,
SSRA Program Director/Head Coach, "I remember talking to the
boys at the end of the first run inspection and reminding them that
they are the BEST. And they really started in believing in themselves
as much as we, the coaches do. It was a total team effort. Everyone
contributed. Maybe that is why this means so much to all of us."
